How To Set up a Sewing Machine?

How To Set up a Sewing Machine? 5 Easy Steps

When you decide to get a sewing machine of your own, the first thing you need to do after buying one is to set it up properly.

Because the setup is not right no matter how good and sophisticated your machine is, you will find all shots of troubles popping out of it.

how to set up a sewing machine

One problem will cause the other one and then nothing will work properly. Even it may lead to the complete failure of your machine.

You will get frustrated and not realizing the right cause, start blaming the wrong things. Finally, end up leaving your whole project.

So, proper set up is very important and it can be very simple if you pay attention to every detail and follow along with the instructions.

So, let’s get into those instructions.

Before Getting Started: How To Set up a Sewing Machine

Nowadays, modern sewing machines come in all different sizes and shapes.

The same brand offers different models with different load and capacity which can be electric or manual.

So, it is always good to keep the user manual at hand that came with your particular one.

But if somehow you don’t have it or it’s not making complete sense with all its different fancy named components and functions, therefore, need assistance, no worries!

When it comes to the primary main functionality and basic components of those different sewing machines, they are usually the same.

So, if you don’t or do have your manual or can manage one, keep it at hand, and let’s go side by side.

We will get the whole process done perfectly in no time. There are only five main steps you need to follow.

And the steps are:

  • Get all the accessories ready.
  • Set the needle up.
  • Prepare the bobbin by winding.
  • Complete threading the machine. And, finally
  • Set the pressure foot then have a test sewing.

1. Get all the Accessories Ready

Let’s start by getting your machine out of the case. If it’s already out then put in a suitable position.

All most all sewing machines come with some accessories which are normally listed in the manuals.

Accessories like needles, bobbins, foot paddle, power cable, thread components, tools, etc. Make sure all the components are there.

So, that you can avoid wasting time looking for this tor hat again and again during the whole process.

2. Set the Needle up

The first accessory we are going to set up is the needle. If you look carefully you will see usually there are two particular sides of the needle.

One side is flat and the other side is a bit round. This particular shape is for helping you to set the needle properly into your particular machine.

Find the screw jack which holds the needle, loosen it enough so that you can insert the needle, matching its both sides, and then tighten up. The needle is good to go.

Make sure you frequently change the needle to get skipped stitches less and smooth sewing.

3. Prepare the Bobbin by Winding

The next thing we need to do is wind the bobbin. Now there are all sorts of different sized and shaped, plastic, and metal bobbins that can be found in the market.

So, be certain to use the bobbin best fit for your machine. In most modern machines there are automatic bobbin winders.

If you also have one put the thread spool on the top middle bar and follow the guide (usually arrows painted on top of the machine) to wind the bobbin.

Put the thread through the clip or clips on top of your machine. Wrap around the knob while checking the proper tension of the thread.

Put the thread through one of the holes in the bobbin if any otherwise just wrap the thread so that it holds with the bobbin.

Then wound the bobbin evenly in the clockwise direction by pressing the pressure foot.

Now, insert the bobbin into the bobbin holder compartment below the needle, wrap the thread, and put the cover on. The bobbin is ready to go!

4. Complete Threading the Machine

After winding the bobbin, we will thread the machine. To do that first you need to place the spool onto the spindle, which is on top of the machine.

And then the thread onto it. Now run the thread through the particular clips of your machine.

As it is subjective to the model of your machine you can take a look in your manual and follow along.

Do not miss to catch the thread take-up lever. Through the last clip (generally helps to stabilize the thread) along the needle, thread the needle.

Most of the time the machine comes with an automatic threader. If you have that, it’s even easier!

5. Set the Pressure Foot Then Have a Test Sewing

Finally, what we are left with is attaching the presser foot. In your machine, it can be a case of clipping it on by lowering the presser foot using the lever.

You can take a look at your manual if otherwise. If you reached up to this successfully, now it’s time for you to a test sewing.

Plugin the power cable, switch it on. Grab a scrap of fabric and start stitching. Getting a nice and smooth stitch?

Congratulations, your machine is threaded correctly. But if it doesn’t stitch smoothly or stuck then try rethreading the needle and then the bobbin too if needed.

Hopefully, the problem will resolve. It’s very common to miss something in one of those steps.

And one last thing, there is a hand wheel at the rightmost side of your machine.

Whenever you use it like for putting the very first or last stitch, always rotate it towards yourself.

Final Words

You might think it a very long process, but once you get it done it will very much be worth it.

A proper setup always gives you full control and satisfaction of good work.

So, get that set upright and get the most from your machine from the very first day. Now you’re ready to sew! Happy sewing!

How Does Sewing Machine Work?

How Does Sewing Machine Work? 3 Steps

With the change of time sewing machines evolved in every way. In terms of power sources, materials for every other thing got upgrades.

But the mechanism of how it works remained unchanged. We all know how to use a sewing machine, don’t we?

But have you ever thought of how a sewing machine works? If your curious mind wants to know how a sewing machine works then this article is for you.

There are many types of sewing machines but as electronic sewing machines are used more we will talk about the electronic one.

Full detail is given below to make you understand how an electronic sewing machine works.

Setup: How Does Sewing Machine Work

First power on the machine switch. Then take a thread and place it on the spool spin. Bring the thread from the spool through the thread guide.

Make sure your Bobbin is in the right place. Add the thread with the bobbin and make sure it attaches properly to it for rewinding.

Now, look into your machine if it has any adjustment dial. Then adjust the thread tension dial the way you need.

You should know the basic things unless you cannot operate it. A guide book is always given with the machine.

So if you are a new sewer you should go through that book.

It will help you to understand how the outsiders’ parts work. And what you need to do to install the basic things.

Inside Mechanism of the Machine

The most important parts that help the machine sew are the motor, the bobbin, the needle, and the fed.

Everything is important but these parts do the main job for stitching. But the most basic thing that helps to stitch follows some steps.

These steps are discussed below:

Step1:

The machine will need two threads. These two will be running through the fabric you use.

One thread will go through the spool and another will be attached to the bobbin.

When you start stitching the needle will go up and down and your fabric will move.

Step2:

When the needle goes up and down the thread goes through the fabric. The needle starts to make loops when the fabric moves.

Step3:

Beneath the needle, there is a hook that rotates. When the needle goes down the hook takes the thread from it.

While the needle goes up the hook rotates with the thread. When the needle again goes down the hook takes the thread again.

That is how the stitches are made and the loop creates.

And there is another thread attached to the hook that helps to lock the other thread that is attached to the needle.

It is all about the mechanism. It works so fast that you cannot understand by looking.

Other Parts that Help to Stitch

The cover of the machine hides a lot of parts that you cannot see. Those play similar roles like the outside parts for stitching.

If you ever remove the cover you will see a lot of gears, belts, wires, pulleys inside that.

These are connected and help each other to perform many tasks.

If any of these stops working the whole machine will stop working.

So you have to be very careful and try not to touch these parts.

You don’t have to make any changes inside here. All of the works you need to do is outside that cover.

This is how a normal electronic sewing machine works. There are many other types of electronic machines as well with customized stitch options.

Depending on what you want the machine works accordingly.

How Sewing Machines do Different Stitches

There are types of Stitches a sewing machine can do. One of them is a loop stitch, one is chain stitch and another is lock stitch.

1. Loop Stitch

When you sew with your hand you do loop stitch by passing the needle and thread through two fabrics to attach them.

This loop of the needle continues until you are done stitching. But when you use a machine for doing loop stitches it is not as same as hand stitching.

In the case of machine stitching, the needle is attached to the machine and the eye of the needle is down towards the pointed end.

And when you power on your machine and start sewing the needle will go up and down putting the thread through your fabric.

The needle bar is connected with a powered motor and series of gears and cums which ensures proper moving of the parts.

The inside mechanism helps to pull the loop when the fabric passes accordingly.

It happens underneath the fabric. This is how to loop stitch works.

2. Chain Stitch

Chain stitch is different from the loop stitch. When you do a chain stitch the fabric needs to be held down with the pressure foot.

When you start stitching, with every stitch the machine needle creates loops.

You have to make sure you set everything when you change your stitching type.

It is called a chain stitch because all the loops are held together.

3. The Lock Stitch

No Matter what type of machine you use you will get this stitch option.

It also works like the chain stitch but the only difference is instead of chaining the bobbin adds more thread and uses it to lock the stitch in place properly.

Here the Bobbin and the hook are the main parts that help to lock stitch.

Final Words

You need to know the basic things of how a sewing machine works else you will not be able to sew with it.

But the details of everything are quite hard to understand. The advantage you get if you know every detail is you can easily find out a problem if you face any.

You can also get it fixed by yourself. Thus many have the curiosity of knowing how a sewing machine works.

Everything cannot be described in words because the process is all about the mechanism.

However, we tried to make the basic things clear above in the content.

We hope this article on how does sewing machine work will help you a lot to operate your machine properly.
